Open for Business on Addoway!

Visit My Store
My new store is open for business on Addoway.  Addoway is just over a year old, and already it's generating quite a buzz.  I have about 40 items for sale in the new store.  More to come in the coming months.  Please drop by and browse a bit.  I think you'll like what you see!

My New Store Opening Sometime This Week

Visit My Store

I'm extremely excited to announce that I will be opening my new store on Addoway sometime next weekend. I'm in the process of organizing at the moment, but I should have some very nice collectibles for sale by next Saturday afternoon, hopefully before that, if possible.

Although there's not much there yet, please feel free to visit my new location on Addoway by clicking here.

With the opening of this store, I will be giving my customers more of a choice as to where they would like to shop. My Bonanza store isn't going anywhere, of course, and each store will have slightly different items. I haven't decided which store will have what items just yet. We'll see how things go before I make that determination. Stay tuned.

Oil Prices and the Cost of Shipping

Sometimes I think that we, as a country, have a very short collective memory. Once again fuel prices are on the rise; this time not due to a shortage of any kind, but rather to "speculation" regarding troubles in the Middle East. Once again the rise in prices is beginning to take a toll on almost everything we do day to day, and of course, with the economy only now staggering back to its feet, we should definitely be concerned as to the affect rising prices will have.

But right now, I want to briefly talk about what this situation can and eventually will do to those merchants who sell on-line. Shipping services like UPS, FedEx and the Post Office will naturally have to raise their prices to compensate for the cost of fuel. There's really not much else they can do; after all, these are not non-profits we're talking about. The problem, of course, is that merchants will once again either have to bite the bullet and absorb these increasing costs, or they will have to pass those costs on to the consumer.

There was a time when I provided free shipping for all of my items. Unfortunately, that isn't the case anymore. I try to keep the shipping costs as low as possible, and will charge slightly under the actual shipping costs. With this latest round of increases in fuel, I don't know how much longer that will be feasible.

There are a lot of merchants out there who sell large volumes of relatively inexpensive items, but I question how much longer they will be able to continually do so. When the cost of shipping becomes equal to or greater than most of your inventory, somethings got to give. Customers are only willing to pay for convenience up to a certain point. After that, they'll jump in their cars and drive to to the nearest mall to purchase more inexpensive but necessary items.

I think what this may do is to eventually eliminate the ability to purchase low cost items on-line. Eventually, you may only be able to find the rarer or more expensive item on-line, as the profit margin for these items will make selling them on-line and shipping economically feasible. Regardless, an increase in shipping costs is rarely if ever a good thing. For on-line merchants, it can only be a cause for major concern.

Well That was Certainly a Fun Couple of Days!

We had some "interesting' weather here on the East coast for the last couple of days. In fact, the weather has been "interesting" all winter so far, and there are still at least 6 weeks to go.

Although we didn't get the "epic" ice storm where we were, it was still enough to close down schools and cut power to over 100,000 people (we were not one of them, thank goodness!).

I don't mind driving in snow all that much, but there's just no way to drive on ice. I am definitely ready for spring, although I will admit the scenery this morning was quite striking!

Cabin Fever!

I've always liked the change of seasons. As tired as I might get of high temperatures in the summer, by the time the winter is over, I look forward to the warmer weather. If I could make changes, I'd make winter last about a month. Look, I enjoy sitting in the family room reading a book with the fire going, a warm blanket, a warm drink; watching the snow come down. However, about a month of that is just fine. Let's get into Spring!

This winter just got started, and already I'm ready for it to end! It's been cold, it's been snowy, and I have cabin fever big time! (waa...didn't know I was that good a whiner!). The thing that I really miss when winter roles around is being able to go to the Saturday flea markets. Although technically they're open, in reality there's no one there. Can't say that I blame them. But my hobby (my part time business) depends on them pretty heavily.

I find it fun and relaxing to go hunting for treasures that others may have overlooked. More fun still to turn those treasures around and sell them for a profit. Unfortunately, all of that tends to shut down when the winter months are this nasty!

There are auctions around, but they too are few and far between. That, plus the fact that the competition for items at auctions can get really heavy. It's amazing how many times I've seen people pay more for an item at an auction then the item cost when it was new. The bidding fever really tends to grab some people and doesn't let go. It you're looking to turn what you buy into a profit, you have to learn to sit on your hands sometimes. It's not easy to do, and I'm just as guilty when it comes to paying too much. But I'm getting better at it.

So right now, I'm sitting here in the family room with a nice fire and a hot cup of fresh ground coffee, staring out at the 2 plus feet of snow that eventually will melt..someday. I miss Spring. I'm anxious to get back in the game!

Time To Get Down To Business

Well, now that the Christmas rush is over, it's time to clean the office, one of my least favorite things to do. Unfortunately, it's such a mess that I can't get anything done (anything that's fun anyway) until I finish cleaning the place. That, plus my wife keeps making this "clicking" noise with her tongue and shaking her head every time she walks by the door and looks in. Now I could put a stop to that in one of two ways. If I shut the door, she can't see in to do that. Problem with that is, the place is such a mess that I can't get to the door to shut it. My only alternative is to bite the bullet and dig in. Not my favorite way to spend a cold Saturday afternoon, but since it's snowing and I'm not going anywhere anyway, I might as well be productive...well after my next cup of coffee anyway.

Can't Believe I Haven't Posted Since June!

I always thought that the longer you worked at something, the easier it was supposed to get. Apparently that's not the case. I've been unbelievably busy at work, and as a result, I haven't made a single posting since last June!! I can't believe it's been that long, but obviously it has!

Well all of that should change in a few months as I'm finally going to retire. I'm looking forward to putting more time into writing and along with that, my online business. Can't believe it! Since June??!!!!
